UNAIR history can be traced back from two educational institutions, Nederlands Indische Artsen School (NIAS) and School Tot Opleiding van Indische Tandartsen (STOVIT); respectively established by Netherlands East Indies’ government in 1913 and 1928. .The Government of the Republic of Indonesia officially opened Airlangga University which was the first higher education institution in the eastern region of Indonesia - in 1954. The inauguration of the University of Airlangga made by the first President, Dr. Ir. Soekarno, which coincides with the anniversary of Heroes 9th, November 10, 1954.
