Timor-Leste strengthens primary health care services to tackle Diabetes and Hypertension

During National Health Day in July 2024, "Strengthening Health Services and Climate Resilience in the Prevention of NCDs and Mental Illnesses for a Healthier Timor-Leste." government committed to placing 50,000 people with diabetes and hypertension on protocol-based management by 2025.
Timor-Leste currently has over 165,000 people living with hypertension and 24,800 with diabetes. Importantly, less than 15% of these individuals are receiving treatment, revealing a significant gap in the care cascade. The new initiative, led by the Ministry of Health, seeks to address this by enhancing diabetes and hypertension care and strengthening the health system’s capacity to manage NCDs, especially at the primary healthcare level.
This effort is being supported through the Ministry’s flagship Integrated Health Programme (PIS). As part of the initiative, management protocols for diabetes and hypertension at the primary care level have been revised with input from experts, ensuring a more effective, standardized approach to treatment.
This initiative marks a critical step toward improving the health and well-being of the people of Timor-Leste, addressing the urgent need for better care for those with NCDs.
